The Council of Ministers approved a memorandum between the governments of Bulgaria and Romania for implementation of in-depth investigations for the construction of a new bridge over the Danube river at Ruse-Giurgiu as a basis for negotiations.

The analysis shows multiplied vehicle traffic over the Danube bridge 1 in recent years, as well as increase of the commercial exchange along the Rhine-Danube corridor (corridor 7). The existing facility was commissioned more than 60 years ago and its technical capacity does not allow alleviating traffic. Due to its long-standing use, rehabilitation of the structure is required, leading to suspension of traffic. This creates significant traffic jams, a stress on the infrastructure, and other difficulties. The construction of a new facility at Ruse-Giurgiu will significantly lighten existing traffic, will reduce the negative environmental effect, and will have an overall positive economic effect for the two countries.

By signing a Memorandum between the governments of Bulgaria and Romania for studies for the construction of a new bridge on the Danube river at Ruse-Giurgui, the two countries will lay the foundation for improvement of their transport connections and increased economic activity in the region. Support for the construction of a new facility on the Danube river at Ruse-Giurgui was expressed also by local and regional authorities of the two countries.
