“Demographic change is shaping the future of our regions in significant and lasting ways. Whether in growing or shrinking areas, ensuring equitable access to basic services remains at the heart of regional development strategies.” This was stated by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Ivan Ivanov, who was the keynote speaker at the Ministerial Meeting of the OECD Regional Development Policy Committee in Warsaw. The topic on which the Bulgarian minister kicked off the discussion focused on managing demographic change for long-term sustainability. “In Bulgaria, regional policy is increasingly focused on adapting to these demographic changes. We promote integrated spatial planning that anticipates future needs and strengthens the links between people, services and opportunities. Special attention is being paid to creating vibrant and attractive spaces that respond to population changes,” Ivanov added. He also drew attention to the ageing of the population, which he said presents not only challenges but also new opportunities. “Older people are an essential part of community life - they contribute to intergenerational solidarity and social sustainability. Recognising and supporting their role is vital for building vibrant and inclusive regions,” Ivanov stressed. He said demographic change is not just a challenge to be managed, but also a driver to rethink how we plan our territories in a more sustainable, balanced and people-centred way. “Today's discussion is essential for sharing experiences and shaping policies that are both effective and forward-looking. Only through cooperation and mutual learning can we tackle demographic change in a way that strengthens our societies,” the Regional Minister concluded.
Ivan Ivanov also took part in the panel on improving competitiveness. “In an ever-changing world, we need to focus our efforts on strengthening and resilience of our economies and societies. Achieving this balance requires investment not only in sectors but also in territories, ensuring that all regions have the tools for growth,” the Minister said. He was adamant that it must be ensured that no region is left behind because this is important for social cohesion - the foundation of long-term prosperity for any country.
During his visit to Warsaw, the regional minister will also participate in an informal meeting of EU ministers responsible for cohesion policy, territorial cohesion and urban affairs, which will take place on 21 May. Participants are expected to adopt a Joint Declaration outlining a common vision for the development of Cohesion Policy with a focus on its territorial dimension.
