The Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Mrs. Lilyana Pavlova, met the Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs - U.S. State Department, Mr. Hoyt Yee. She presented the main priorities of the Ministry, focusing on the implementation of road infrastructure and its effective management, conducting reforms in water sector and modernization of water supply infrastructure. Both sides emphasized the importance of the energy efficiency increase through renovation of residential and public buildings. Reference was made to the positive development of the project for construction of gas pipeline between Greece – Bulgaria, where MRDPW is responsible for preparation of the documentation, issuing of building permits and monitoring activities on the construction works.
Mrs. Lilyana Pavlova and Mr. Hoyt Yee shared the common hope of both countries to increase USA investments in Bulgaria. Minister Pavlova stressed that the Bulgarian government creates favourable provisions in order to attract large investors. In addition, she assessed positively the interest of American companies to take part in projects aimed at modernizing the water sector.
The challanges that Bulgaria is facing were discussed within the conversation. Some of the challanges are as follows: the increasing flow of migrants and the measures taken by the government in this respect – providing protection to the refugees that are really in need, enhanced border defence through the completion of the infrastructure along the border with Turkey, as well as more active position within the EU to ensure the security of the EU external borders. The necessity of a common European approach to overcome the consequences of the increased migrant flow was emphasized.
The Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Mrs. Lilyana Pavlova, is in Washington to take part in the National Prayer Breakfast with the US President, Mr. Barack Obama. The prestigious event, which is organized jointly by the White House and the US Congress, gathers annually representatives of the American political elite, diplomats, businessmen, political, religious, scientific, business and state leaders from all over the world.
