The Supreme Expert Environmental Council of the Ministry of Environment and Water approved the Environmental Procedures for the construction of the Strumyani-Berovo (Klepalo) BCP. The decision provides a ‘green light’ for the implementation of the investment proposal for the construction of the border crossing point, the related infrastructure and the bringing road III-1008 from Strumyani to the border with the procuring entities Blagoevgrad Regional Administration and the Road Infrastructure Agency. Option 1 for the route has been approved, which provides for a shorter passage, a lower volume of construction work and a limited environmental impact.  The chosen solution is in line with nature protection requirements, including the protection objectives of the Kresna-Ilindentsi Natura 2000 site. At the same time, it allows the implementation of infrastructure with minimal impact on natural landscapes and biodiversity.

The new bilateral border crossing point, which will be located on the territory of the municipalities of Strumyani and Berovo, is a strategic project under Priority 2 ‘A more connected cross-border region’ of the Interreg VI-A IPA Bulgaria-North Macedonia Programme managed by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. The total cost of the project is EUR 11 million, including the national co-financing of the two countries.

The lead partner is the Blagoevgrad Regional Administration, which has been designated as a beneficiary by a decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria, while a partner on the part of the Republic of North Macedonia is the Customs Department.

The implementation of the project requires coordinated actions between a number of institutions at national and regional level related to the organization and functioning of border control. The successful completion of environmental procedures is an important step towards its implementation and towards improving connectivity in the cross-border region.
