The joint project of UNDP Bulgaria and the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works “Demonstration Project for Renovation of Multifamily Buildings” has won the Sustainable Energy Europe Award, an initiative of the European Commission.  The prize was  given to the Ministry in the category "Residential Buildings”.

A total of 303 initiatives of 27 EU countries have competed, divided into six categories: communicating, learning, living, producing, consuming and travelling.

The award in the category "Residential buildings", received by the Bulgarian project, was for the achieved performance in:
• Significantly increased energy efficiency of 50 buildings, in 14 cities in Bulgaria with 40-60%
• Encouragement of using renewable energy in the residential sector
• The establishment of more than 220 work places
• Improved living conditions and home comfort to more than 1000 Bulgarian households.

The project is worth 6.3 million leva.

The awards official ceremony took place in Brussels on April 12, 2011 under the patronage of the Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger, in the presence of parliamentarians and media representatives. The Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ekaterina Zaharieva and the Head of the Office of the United Nations for Development Maria Zlatareva received the award on behalf of the Bulgarian side.

The Awards ceremony is the culmination of the ongoing annual Sustainable Energy Week in Europe, initiated by the European Commission.

The six-awarded projects were selected, based on the criteria of proved significant impact and potential for replication in other countries, in terms of improving the energy efficiency and renewable energy resources in Europe.
