Spectacular Shows and Entertainment in Ruse and Belene to Mark International Danube Day

For the first time in Bulgaria, a cross-border parade on the Danube River, "Danube Parade – Two Flags, One River," will be held. The event, hosted on the riverfronts of Ruse and Giurgiu, will take place on 27 June 2026 and will feature a river procession of more than 200 boats and jet skis, an aerobatic air show, and live concerts.

Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Pavleta Pelovska will also take part in the event.

Residents and visitors on both banks of the Danube will enjoy a rich programme of music and arts performances, aviation displays, and festive fireworks.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the Ruse – City of Free Spirit Foundation will organise water games for children and families, while the Danube Radiance Association will host the art happening "On the Riverbank," where children will transform the riverfront into a living canvas. An entertaining quiz will challenge participants of all ages, and craft stalls will offer handmade souvenirs.

From 12:00 noon until 11:00 p.m., three venues — the Ruse riverfront, Mokanu Island, and the Giurgiu waterfront—will come alive with DJ performances, food, and refreshments. On the deck of the Pontona restaurant, visitors will have the opportunity to sample Bulgarian and Romanian wines.

After 4:00 p.m., the river parade will begin. Official guests will be welcomed aboard the vessel Sofia, while more than 200 boats and jet skis will fill the Danube with movement, colour, and music. Daytime fireworks above the Danube Bridge at 5:15 p.m. will officially launch the parade. Residents of Ruse and visitors will be able to watch the procession from the quay and the riverside streets.

While the parade continues on the water, children will enjoy their own adventure on the riverfront from 5:00 p.m. The Ruse – City of Free Spirit Foundation will organise a meeting with Neptune and the mermaids, and the god of the river will perform a symbolic river baptism for those wishing to participate. The Europe Direct – Ruse Centre will host an art workshop and present awards to the winners of the "My Message for the Future of the EU" competition. The evening programme for children will conclude with a Danube Disco organised by the Ivan P. Pavlov Vocational High School of Tourism.

At 6:15 p.m., an aerobatic air show above Ruse and Giurgiu will begin, featuring colourful smoke effects in the national colours of Bulgaria and Romania. Spectacular aerial manoeuvres over the river will create a symbol of unity in the sky, and five minutes later, at 6:20 p.m., the riverfront will light up with daytime fireworks, music, and visual effects, turning the afternoon into an unforgettable spectacle.

The parade is expected to pass close to the Ruse waterfront between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. and will remain visible until approximately 7:30 p.m.

The day's programme will conclude at 8:00 p.m. with a concert by the Bulgarian band Ostava.

International Danube Day will also be celebrated in the town of Belene, where the initiative "The River Remembers" will take place. At exactly 7:00 p.m., participants in all settlements along the Danube will launch biodegradable paper boats carrying messages of hope, sustainable development, environmental protection, and a better future for the next generations. In this way, the Danube will become a living link connecting the people, communities, and countries that share its banks.

The occasion is International Danube Day, celebrated annually on 29 June. The events aim to bring together Danube municipalities, local communities, civil society organisations, children, and volunteers along the entire course of the river in a symbolic act of unity, remembrance, and shared responsibility for the future of the Danube Region.

The initiatives in the riverside towns are part of the calendar of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works under the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. A key priority of the Presidency is reducing disparities through stronger cohesion and integration, with a particular focus on addressing regional inequalities as a challenge to competitiveness and stability. It also recognises the role of cities as key drivers in reducing disparities and advancing social cohesion, skills development, and cultural connectivity.
