The opening of the Klepalo border crossing checkpoint between Strumyani and Berovo is the most important project for the region

Another 30m euros from the EU will be invested in the development of the border regions of Bulgaria and the Republic of Northern Macedonia under the cross-border co-operation programme managed by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. This was announced by Deputy Minister Zahari Hristov in a special video address on the occasion of September 21 - European Cooperation Day, one of the EC's campaigns to promote the results of European territorial co-operation.

Deputy Minister Hristov noted that the investments will be focused on the development of a clean and green environment, sustainable tourism and supporting competitiveness in the cross-border region.

"Among our priority sites is the construction of the new border checkpoint" Klepalo "between the municipalities of Strumyani and Berovo, for which we have allocated funds, thus we will have another road connection for the development of bilateral relations," said Hristov.

The Deputy Regional Minister pointed out that thanks to the Interreg programmes, the appearance of the border settlements of the two countries has been renewed in the last 20 years. "We have provided adequate access to natural landmarks, restored ancient fortresses and churches, helped local cultural, educational and sports centres to be active among our children and youth, as evidenced by their success at numerous competitions and festivals. I admire these young people who revive traditions and share ideas for the future without setting boundaries between them," said Deputy Minister Hristov. He was adamant that everything done so far has contributed to a positive change in relations between the two peoples and increased mutual trust.

"Every year, on 21 September, European Cooperation Day is celebrated throughout Europe. This event makes us proud that the borders between our countries can connect, not divide. We build side by side, we celebrate our common traditions, we overcome challenges together and we know that a friend is standing next to us, ready to understand and support us, "Hristov added.

Interreg Cross-Border Co-operation Program between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Northern Macedonia celebrates the holiday with a Virtual Tourism Fair, including various destinations under the programme. You can watch it live on the program's Facebook and YouTube channels from 13:00 today.
