More than 207 million euros will be invested in the border areas of the two countries

The European Commission has approved the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria CBC Programme 2021-2027. It foresees investments of more than 207 million euro in the border areas of the two countries. They cover 8 counties in northern Bulgaria (Vidin, Vratsa, Montana, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Ruse, Dobrich and Silistra and 7 counties in southern Romania (Mehedinți, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Călărași and Constanța).

80% of the funds are provided by the European Regional Development Fund, 20% are national co-financing of the two countries.

A significant new element over the next 7 years is the support for integrated development measures in the cross-border area, involving investments in different complementary sectors.

Among the Programme’s priority projects is the construction of the joint part of the Eurovelo Route 6 cycle route. Measures are also envisaged to boost tourism and cultural activities, strengthen the local economy and ensure sustainable transport links between Danube villages.

Projects will also be funded in the areas of mobility and connectivity, nature conservation and biodiversity, risk prevention and adaptation to climate change, education, tourism and culture.
