It is natural that the construction of the Cross Border Checkpoint Silistra-Kalarash follows the construction of the Cross Border Checkpoints Vidin-Kalafat, Oriahovo-Becket, Rousse-Guerguevo between Bulgaria and Romania, announced the Regional Development and Public Works Minister Valentin Cerovski at the ceremony on the occasion of the beginning of construction works of the future cross border checkpoint of Silistra. Guests of the ceremony of turning the symbolic first sod were Antonio Izkierdo - Charge D’Affairs of the European Commission Delegation for Bulgaria, His Grace Ilarion – a metropolitan bishop of Dorostol Eparchy who performed the holy-water ceremony, Sylvia Neicheva - MP from the National Movement Simeon II from the region, Silistra District Governor Petko Dobrev, Silistra Mayor Ivo Andonov, Mihai Arabadzhik – District Council Chairman of the town of Kalarash and other representatives of the local authorities of Bulgaria and Romania. The Contractor of the construction works is the Bulgarian consortium Sikonko. The construction supervision is performed by the English consultant company Mott McDonald. Minister Valentin Cerovski emphasized that the implementation of the cross border checkpoint of Silistra, the construction of a terminal and launching the ferry-boat connection between the two towns by the Danube would facilitate the traffic of automobiles and passengers along the Balkan transport corridor. It represents the most direct link between the Near East and Ukraine, Moldavia, Russia and countries from the region. Mr. Antonio Izkierdo emphasized that the construction of the Cross Border Checkpoint Silistra-Kalarash would enhance the communications between people from the two border regions and will contribute to the cultural exchange development. The checkpoint will also favour the national and international traffic of commodities and passengers and will promote the economic development of the region.
