The preparation of the new cross-border cooperation programme between Bulgaria and Romania for the period 2021-2027 was discussed today by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Petya Avramova and Deputy Minister Denitsa Nikolova at a working meeting with the Ambassador of Romania to Bulgaria His Excellency Ion Gulia.

The main objectives we want to be set in the programme are related to the economic development of the border region, Minister Avramova said.  Our country's proposal is to follow a strategic approach and to invest part of the programme's resources in strategic projects to be implemented on the territory of Bulgaria and Romania.  Measures for economic growth and support for small and medium-sized enterprises are also proposed.

Deputy Minister Nikolova explained that according to the EU rules for the new programming period up to 30% of the programme budget can be directed to strategic projects.  Preparations for two such projects have already started.  One is for the preparation of a pre-investment study for new bridges and port facilities along the  Danube for the purpose of rehabilitation of the transport corridor, improvement of navigability and navigation. The other strategic project is the development of the Euro-Welo 6 route, the initiative for which comes from the municipalities along the river.  It will also contribute to achieving the priorities of the Danube Strategy.

Both projects aim to stimulate economic activity by improving transport accessibility and business conditions in the border region, as well as tourism development.

Minister Avramova and Ambassador Gulia noted the good relations between the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works and the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration of Romania, as well as the bilateral cooperation in the field of regional development, transport and other areas of mutual interest.
