More than BGN 3.6 billion will be invested in the development of Bulgarian regions

The European Commission has approved the Development of Regions Programme 2021-2027, managed by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works. During the implementation period, more than BGN 3.6 billion will be invested for the development of the Bulgarian regions. Initiatives for urban infrastructure development are foreseen, with a focus on “green investments” in the territories of the 10 largest cities in Bulgaria, as well as projects for integrated territorial development in Level 2 planning regions.

The planned measures build on the results of the Operational Programme “Regions in Growth” 2014-2020 and prioritise integrated territorial investments for the renewal and modernisation of road, education, health, economic, social and cultural infrastructure, energy efficiency and sustainable urban mobility, development of tourism and sport, support for a green urban environment and attractive public spaces. To achieve an integrated effect, complementary funding will be provided by a further five of the approved programmes for Bulgaria. These are in the areas of human resource development, education, science, competitiveness and environment.

The programme is based on a bottom-up approach and seeks enhanced cross-sectoral and inter-institutional dialogue and coordination, as well as strengthening local and regional capacity to manage and invest EU funds. The establishment of successful partnerships between different stakeholders at local level - public, private sector and NGOs - will be important for project implementation.
